Free NWSA TTT-1 Practice Test

25 questions · instant scoring · explanations cite the standard · Candidate Handbook REV 10/25

The real NWSA Telecommunications Tower Technician 1 exam is 85 questions · 90 minutes. These 25 questions are weighted the same way the handbook weights the exam — planning & job logistics 15%, fall protection climber-rescuer 30%, hoisting & rigging 20%, structures 15%, appurtenance installation 20% — so your score tells you which domain to study, not just whether you would pass. Every explanation names the OSHA, ANSI or ASME source so you can check it yourself.

How to use this test

Answer every question before you check. Treat it like the real thing: closed book, no notes. When you score it you get a breakdown by domain — that is the list of what to study. Open "Show answer and explanation" on anything you missed; the explanation is written to teach the rule, not just confirm the letter.

The full TTT-1 Pro course has the complete 50-question timed practice exam, a real-exam mode matching the 85 questions format, flashcards, and a weak-area report that updates as you study — in English, Spanish and Russian.

25 practice questions for the NWSA TTT-1 exam

Question 1 of 25Planning & job logistics

Before the first climber leaves the ground, which of these must already exist on site?

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. ANSI/ASSP A10.48 requires rescue capability to be planned, equipped and staffed before work at height begins. Calling 911 is a medical plan, not a rescue plan — municipal responders are rarely equipped for tower rescue.

Question 2 of 25Planning & job logistics

A Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) or tailboard briefing is held:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. The JHA is a daily document. Hazards change with weather, crew, and scope, so it is reviewed and signed each shift before anyone works.

Question 3 of 25Planning & job logistics

You arrive on site and the construction drawing does not show a small dish the foreman wants mounted. The correct action is:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. Every appurtenance adds wind and dead load. The tower's ANSI/TIA-222 analysis covers a defined list at defined elevations; adding to it without engineering review changes the analysis.

Question 4 of 25Planning & job logistics

Who on a tower crew has the authority to stop work for a safety concern?

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. Stop-work authority belongs to every person on the crew. A culture that reserves it for supervisors produces fatalities.

Question 5 of 25Fall protection

On a tower site, OSHA's construction standard (29 CFR 1926) and ANSI/ASSP A10.48 require fall protection beginning at:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. 6 feet under 1926.501 and A10.48, which govern tower construction and climbing. OSHA's general industry rule (1910.28) uses 4 feet — know the distinction. In practice A10.48 requires 100% fall protection whenever you are climbing.

Question 6 of 25Fall protection

Under OSHA 1926.502, an anchorage used for personal fall arrest must support at least:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. 1926.502(d)(15): 5,000 lb per employee attached, or part of a complete system designed, installed and used under a qualified person's supervision with a safety factor of at least two.

Question 7 of 25Fall protection

Which harness D-ring is the primary attachment point for fall arrest?

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. The dorsal D-ring is designed to orient the body upright during arrest. Side D-rings are for work positioning only. The sternal ring has limited fall-arrest use with compatible ladder-climbing systems under ANSI Z359.11, but the dorsal ring is the primary point.

Question 8 of 25Fall protection

OSHA limits free-fall distance in a personal fall arrest system to:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. 1926.502(d)(16)(iii): free fall of no more than 6 feet, and the worker must not contact a lower level. Many devices and site rules require less.

Question 9 of 25Fall protection

A harness has been subjected to a fall arrest. There is no visible damage. It should be:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. OSHA 1926.502(d)(19) requires immediate removal from service, with no reuse unless a competent person determines it undamaged; most manufacturers require destruction outright. Webbing and hardware can be damaged in ways inspection cannot see.

Question 10 of 25Fall protection

A Y-lanyard (twin-leg lanyard) exists so that a climber can:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. One leg stays attached while the other moves. A10.48 requires 100% fall protection whenever the climber is off the ground, including every transition.

Question 11 of 25Fall protection

Which of these is NOT an acceptable fall-arrest anchorage?

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. Antenna mounts are rated for the antenna's static and wind loads, not for a dynamic arrest. They are mounting hardware, not anchorages.

Question 12 of 25Hoisting & rigging

The Working Load Limit (WLL) stamped on a shackle is:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. WLL is the maximum service load. Breaking strength is typically five times WLL for rigging hardware, but that margin exists to cover shock, wear and uncertainty — it is never available for use.

Question 13 of 25Hoisting & rigging

A tag line on a hoisted load is used to:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. The tag line lets a ground worker steer the load clear of the structure and stop it spinning. It never carries load.

Question 14 of 25Hoisting & rigging

Under ASME B30.9, a synthetic web sling must be removed from service if it shows:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. B30.9 removal criteria include cuts, snags, holes, tears, burns, melting, chemical or UV damage, broken stitching, knots, and a missing or unreadable identification tag.

Question 15 of 25Hoisting & rigging

Tools are moved up and down the tower by:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. Hands stay free for three-point contact. Anything carried is a dropped-object hazard for the crew below.

Question 16 of 25Hoisting & rigging

A snatch block is:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. Its hinged side plate lets a rope be inserted mid-line. It redirects hoist lines or builds mechanical advantage — and the force on the block can approach twice the line tension at a 180° turn.

Question 17 of 25Structures

What keeps a guyed tower upright?

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. Guyed masts are slender; the guy wires provide lateral stability. Their tension is an engineered value measured at each level, not adjusted by feel.

Question 18 of 25Structures

Guy wires on a guyed tower are:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. They are load-bearing structure, not fall-protection anchorage. Shock loading a guy with a fall also changes the structure's behavior.

Question 19 of 25Structures

An ice bridge at a telecom site is:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. The ice bridge is the horizontal run between tower and shelter. It supports the lines and shields them from ice falling off the tower. The vertical run on the tower is the cable ladder.

Question 20 of 25Structures

Diagonal cross-bracing on a lattice tower primarily provides:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. The diagonals tie the legs together so the tower acts as one stiff truss instead of three slender columns.

Question 21 of 25Appurtenance installation

Antenna mounting fasteners are tightened to:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. Under-torque loosens in wind; over-torque yields the fastener or crushes the clamp. Only a calibrated wrench to the published value is defensible.

Question 22 of 25Appurtenance installation

A coaxial line was kinked during the hoist. The correct action is:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. Exceeding minimum bend radius crushes the dielectric and deforms the outer conductor. Straightening does not repair it, and the fault shows up on the sweep.

Question 23 of 25Appurtenance installation

The standard three-layer weatherproofing on an outdoor RF connector, built from the connector outward, is:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. The inner tape layer lets the connector be serviced later without butyl on the threads; the outer tape protects the butyl from UV and abrasion. This is the OEM (CommScope) method.

Question 24 of 25Appurtenance installation

Transmission-line ground conductors on a tower should run:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. A ground path that turns upward or makes sharp bends presents high impedance to a lightning impulse. Down and out, with sweeping bends, every time.

Question 25 of 25Appurtenance installation

Total antenna downtilt is:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. Mechanical tilt is set by the bracket; electrical tilt is set inside the antenna (often by RET). They are set separately and sum to the total.
