What is on the TTT-1 written exam
From the NWSA Candidate Handbook (CH REV 10/25): 85 questions, 90 minutes, online remote proctoring, $274 per sitting. Prerequisite: None — TTT-1 is the entry certification. NWSA sets the passing score through a standard-setting process and does not publish it.
| Domain | Share of exam |
|---|---|
| Planning the scope of work and job logistics | ~15% |
| Fall protection, climbing and rescue | ~30% |
| Hoisting equipment and rigging | ~20% |
| Structures | ~15% |
| Appurtenance installation and maintenance | ~20% |
The 30% domain — fall protection, climbing and rescue — is where most first-time candidates lose the exam, not because they can’t climb but because the questions are worded the way the standards are written, not the way a foreman talks. The Safety & Fall Protection and Climbing & Telecom modules are built around exactly that gap.

What is in the guide
- 9 modules, 20 lessons — sized to each domain’s share of the exam, written by tower technicians in plain language and cited to the standards the questions are drawn from: Course overview and exam strategy; Safety & fall protection; Tower structure; RF safety; Electrical & LOTO; Tools & rigging; Climbing & telecom; Appurtenance install & maintenance; Planning & job logistics.
- Module quizzes after every module, with an explanation for every wrong answer — not just the right one.
- 73 flashcards — the definitions, numbers and thresholds the exam actually asks for, in a format that works on a phone.
- 50-question timed practice exam covering every domain of the real exam, so a score here tells you something about a score there.
- Weak-area report that names the domain to go back to, and a completion record you can show an employer (a training milestone — not a credential).
- 298-question exam bank — enough for three full NWSA-length real exams without seeing a question twice; the draw serves the questions you have not answered first, and every answer is explained.
- Real exam mode — NWSA’s 85 questions in 90 minutes, no feedback until you submit, with flag-for-review, a question map and a review screen. Every miss is explained at the end.
- Readiness by domain — every answer feeds a gauge weighted to the handbook domain percentages, and the dashboard names the domain to drill next.
- Mistake bank and spaced flashcards — missed questions come back on a schedule until you have them down; flashcards you know move further out, and the ones you don’t come back the same day.
- Install it like an app — add the course to your phone’s home screen (no app store); it keeps working without signal once opened, and your progress follows your key to any device.
- Search and print — search every lesson, flashcard and practice question in your language, and print the flashcards or your own mistake list for the truck or the night before the exam.
- English, Spanish and Russian — every lesson, quiz and flashcard.
Who it is for
Anyone sitting the TTT-1 for the first time, or re-sitting it after a fail. There is no prerequisite for TTT-1, so this is where every tower technician starts. Employers who put new hires through the written before their first climb use the crew version of this same course.
How it works
- Pay by card at checkout. Your licence key appears on screen and in your email immediately.
- Open the course, enter the key and your email once. Access runs 60 days from that moment, on any device.
- Work the modules in order, drill the flashcards, then sit the timed practice exam. Book the real exam with NWSA when the weak-area report comes back clean.
Sample TTT-1 exam questions
Three questions from the guide's own bank, worked the way every question in the guide is — the answer, then the reason. The guide's timed practice exam and weak-area report tell you which domain to go back to.
1. On a tower site, OSHA's construction standard (29 CFR 1926) and ANSI/ASSP A10.48 require fall protection at what height?
- 10 feet
- 4 feet
- 6 feet
- Any height above ground
Answer: C. 6 feet under OSHA 1926.501 and ANSI/ASSP A10.48, which govern tower construction and climbing. OSHA's general industry standard (1910.28) triggers at 4 feet — know the distinction. Once you are 6 feet up, A10.48 requires continuous fall protection, transitions included.
2. What is the minimum anchor point rating required per attached worker?
- 7,500 lbs
- 2,000 lbs
- 3,500 lbs
- 5,000 lbs
Answer: D. OSHA 1926.502(d)(15), the construction rule that governs tower work, requires fall arrest anchorages to support 5,000 lbs per attached worker, or be part of a system designed by a qualified person with a safety factor of at least two.
3. A harness that has arrested a fall should be:
- Sent to the manufacturer for re-certification
- Inspected and reused if no damage is visible
- Retired immediately, regardless of visible damage
- Returned to service after 48 hours
Answer: C. A harness that has arrested a fall comes out of service immediately: the forces can leave invisible damage in webbing and hardware. Most manufacturers require it to be destroyed; OSHA 1926.502(d)(19) allows reuse only after a competent person inspects it and finds it undamaged.
