10 hoisting equipment & rigging questions

Question 1 of 10

A gin pole's rated capacity depends on:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. The manufacturer's load chart is configuration-specific. Changing the setup changes the capacity; the chart travels with the pole.

Question 2 of 10

Before a gin pole lift, the TTT-2 confirms:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. Four separate checks: equipment, plan, load math, structure. Any one missing stops the lift.

Question 3 of 10

The rigging plan class under A10.48 is determined by:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. Classes scale required planning and personnel. A 200-lb appurtenance is Class II; engineered lifts and complex modifications reach Class IV with a qualified engineer.

Question 4 of 10

Load-line tension in a block that turns the line 180° is approximately:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. At 180° both legs pull the same direction: 2T. At 90° it is about 1.41T. Block and anchor ratings must cover the resultant, not the line tension.

Question 5 of 10

Two-leg bridle, 1,000-lb load, legs at 45° from horizontal. Tension per leg is about:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. (1,000 ÷ 2) ÷ sin 45° = 500 ÷ 0.707 ≈ 707 lb. Sling angle multiplies tension; below 30° it climbs fast.

Question 6 of 10

Wire rope used as a gin pole load line is retired when:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. Inspection is criteria-based. The competent rigger inspects daily before use; results are documented.

Question 7 of 10

A load that must be rotated to clear the structure during the lift calls for:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. Tag lines are planned, not improvised. They control rotation and swing; they never carry load and are never wrapped on the body.

Question 8 of 10

Hoisting a load with a capstan, the operator's tail rope is:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. The capstan is friction-controlled. A snag or slip with a wrapped hand pulls the operator into the drum.

Question 9 of 10

Before rigging from a structural member, the member is:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. The plan names the points because the analysis credited them with capacity. A corroded member voids that assumption.

Question 10 of 10

Hoisting operations must stop when:

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. Common wind limits are around 15 mph sustained for hoisting, but the plan and the gin pole manufacturer's limits govern. Loss of communication is an automatic stop.

Frequently asked questions

How much of the NWSA TTT-2 exam is hoisting equipment & rigging?

24%, per the Candidate Handbook REV 10/25 content outline. The full TTT-2 exam is 100 questions · 120 minutes.

Is the NWSA exam computer-based?

Yes. Since January 2024 every NWSA certification exam is delivered by Online Remote Proctoring (ORP) — you take it on your own computer with a live proctor. The practical exam component was discontinued at the same time.

What score do I need to pass the NWSA exam?

NWSA does not publish a passing score. Exams are criterion-referenced and the cut score is set by a panel of subject-matter experts; results are reported as pass/fail with a domain-by-domain breakdown. Any site quoting a specific percentage is guessing.

How much does the NWSA exam cost?

$274 for every NWSA certification — TTT-1, TTT-2, A&L, Foreman and ARC. Retakes are the same $274, with a 30-day wait between attempts. Fees are set by NWSA and can change; nws-a.org is the authority.

Exam facts on this page are from the NWSA Candidate Handbook, CH REV 10/25. Fees, formats and rules change — the handbook is the authority. NWSA Study Guide is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or recognized by the National Wireless Safety Alliance.
